Bookworm Magazine

Hi class,

This is Bookworm Magazine, a fictional monthly magazine for book-lovers that feature upcoming books as well as interviews with famous authors. My concept was to work with a color palette that consisted mostly of blacks and blues as well as the golds for the new year spread and to use the book cover artwork throughout my design. I am really happy with how this turned out and would appreciate any feedback to help me further this piece along.

  1. Kayla,
I like the blue that you've added much more than the tan/brown color you had before because it really seemed to feel separate from the rest of the magazine. Now with this blue it seems to unify it into the magazine more. I also like that you brought out the image on page 3 more. Bringing up the contrast on this page has made it much more interesting and doesn't make it feel pushed aside next to page 4 with the cover.

  2. Kayla - interesting articles, and a good theme. A few things to think about:

    1. Cover - the lovely rectangular heading is quite "bookish" and stylish... however, it sits in an awkward spot on the cover in relation to the image. It seems too low on the page, leaving black unactivated space at top of the page (the most important area of a magazine cover). So... pull it up!

    2. Page 2/3 - does the author have a complete body? If he does, I would encourage you to use his whole body, and wrap the text on page 3 around his back.

    3. Top 10 Books pages - I don't understand the repeated structural illustration you are using in the corners. What is it? What is it supposed to make me think? It would be very appropriate to draw an abstract pile of books, laying open and on top of each other... spilling onto the page. I think you may be intending that here... but it isn't clear to me. It would be worth it to create a strong cover illustration for this article, because you'll get a lot of use out of it!

    4. This One Summer - right page... does it need a heading? I don't think so because we see the book large and will read it... so instead move the word "now" to the bottom line and delete the rest of the words... just pull up the book image and work with the type at the bottom.

    5. Love the way the back cover "covers" up the title in the background...a clever visual of the title. Nice.

    1. Oops - Kayla, I meant to say that you could draw a good corner illustration (of those spilling books)... "corner" not "cover"!!

    2. Hmmm... and again, I'm not clear about the last right hand page with, what looks like, the book cover illustration on it. I mean to say that you don't need a heading on this page, since it seems redundant with the book sitting there. My suggestion is to delete the words up at the top, add the word "now" to the beginning of the bottom line of text. Hope this is more clear.

  3. Kayla, I really like your cover design for this and agree with Coni, moving that black square up would show more books and even out the layout. I like your use of large imagery everywhere in the magazine, except there isn't any on the top 10 books page so that page does look a bit out of place as is. They seem too modern and technical for a bookworm magazine. I see them on the next page but they are way more subtle and tie into the imagery on the page. Maybe on the top 10 book page you could have a row of all the covers along the bottom, having them on a bookshelf? Hope this helps :)
