Authors Poster

Hi class,

This is the list poster I created for Typography Hierarchy. I touched up the original version (the first one) and felt that the grid structure wasn't at all engaging enough. I then started playing with a slanted grid and sort of fell in love with the way it looked after that. I want your opinions on it. Do you feel that it is too much? Are there any other elements to the design that I should work on?

  1. I loooove the revised version. It's much more dynamic and engaging with the axial grid. The way you've laid it out really drags the reader's eye along the piece, and the really subtle gradient you used in the background adds dimension.

I MIGHT try to find a thinner typeface for the body text to make it a little easier to read, but I love the typewriter effect with the theme of the piece and it's not illegible so I wouldn't stress about it.

  2. Kayla - I would also think that a slightly condensed body copy will allow you to massage the column grid a bit to have more neg space along the outside of the text and away from the trim edges of the piece. Also - I wonder if you see the neg shape that sits at the bottom of the first column? I wonder if another type of coffee stain would help activate this space? I encourage you, because you'll have some time as you take a semester off, to develop the coffee cup illustration beyond this rather technical style. Think of a one of those famous writers sitting at their desk after 15 hours straight of writing/typing and drinking caffeine to keep themselves going. Messy might be an understatement! Maybe this could take on that "feel" without adding much more... the style of illustration could do it. The axial grid has started to add this "desk" feel because most people slant their paper as they hand write... it's a great approach!

  3. Kayla,

The revised version looks great! It is much more interesting visually, and the grid you used makes the piece feel more modern and exciting. I do agree about using body copy with a thinner weight for legibility purposes, but I like the typeface in the header and subhead.

  4. The revised version is much better. The original made me feel like I was reading text on a poster. The new revised version, with just the slant, gives me the feeling of the text being on the same "table" as the coffee cup now, and makes it more exciting in my opinion
