I did this project for a typography class. The assignment was to use more than one grid system and make them work together. I want to include it in my portfolio but I could use your feedback for ideas on how to improve it first. I was thinking about adding texture to the background... Thoughts?
Project: To create a poster for the “Design Culture Now”
event that showcases different designers and the times when they will be giving their
lectures.
Message: The target audience is young artists, 18-26, who
would be fresh into the field and looking for advice from talented
professionals. The poster needs to give the feeling of design culture.
Influences: I wanted to give this piece a bit of a street
feel, like graffiti or the road lines painted on asphalt. The idea was to make
it young, somewhat edgy and down to earth.

Siobhan - this is almost done, in my opinion. It accomplishes the gritty street feel, and the typography is interesting and successful. I have only 2 suggestions for you:
ReplyDelete1. Proof this carefully, I see a typo in the first line!
2. I wonder if you want to push the "street grit" a bit further and actually have the background either become more textural, or allow it to disintegrate a bit at bottom right (where there is room) to actually "become" separate clumps of grit? We'll "see" the poster design seemingly dissolve into grit. Push this a bit, and it will move past a simple typography assigment!
it might look cool if you add cement wall texture really low opacity to give it a little more rough and urban look. i might darken your background a little more to give it more contrast; At the moment that black feels really warm.
ReplyDeleteSio,
ReplyDeleteI definitely think you have a good idea here with bringing some texture into the background. You could probably find some free grunge textures online or on all-free-download. If you used a gradient mask and overlay, you could effectively have the texture disappear where the text is, and be subtle in the background, drawing attention to the corners. I think you could pick a texture with a nice warm orange tone to it, and drop out the warmth in the background.
If you wanted to avoid a texture, you could use some kind of abstract, geometric, and thin line pattern in very light overlay to draw some attention and depth to the background without being distracting. I'm seeing a pale yellow and golden colors pulled from the font.

I love the typography here! And I think it's a great idea to possibly bring in a texture in the background.
ReplyDeleteSiobhan,
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoy this piece. I am curious to see the background with more of a texture to really get the urban feel across, but I feel it is being portrayed well with the typography. Like Coni mentioned, definitely proof read this piece! Something that caught my eye is that it seems like the angle of "now" is different than the angle of the rest of the copy in the piece. perhaps setting those at the same angle with create a better sense of balance in the piece, and the repetition of the angles might help the viewers eye through the title. Overall, I feel you have definitely gotten this piece to appeal to your target, so great job!
