Hi everyone, here is my songbook. It is "Let it be" by The Beatles. It is in the style of an accordion book, I chose colors that imitated colors and patterns from the 1960's. After research about the song and learning that it was a song written by Paul McCartney for his mother Mary, I wanted to give it a hint of a hand written influence to mimic his personal notes when writing this song.
It may be a little hard to follow, my original version would not save as one spread. I am in the process of switching a lot of things around so I have not completed the redraft, and I am contemplating if the whole song is needed at this point.
I've uploaded my new version as one spread but added individual jpegs incase the spread was too small!
I definitely think the whole song should be put into this project and have it be printed and put together for display at your portfolio show. But for the portfolio book, I don't think it would hurt to leave part of it out if its hard to fit it all in the portfolio book. Good work on this piece. I love the color scheme and I can easily see rhythm from page to page. I never heard this song before so I will leave my suggestions at that.
ReplyDeleteI think leaving it shorter works. I know you were concerned about the repetitiveness and losing the message along the way. The shorter spread works in your favor and I think leaves the message clear and since it is such a popular song I don't think you need it all for people to understand. Where you cut it off defiantly works as well.
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI think for a digital file it's good to leave it at this length and for a print out, as Maria was saying, it would be nice if it was the entire song. Very nice song choice and I like the elements and the text used in the background in your overall layout though. This has to be one of my favorite pieces of yours.
I really like the shortened version like we talked about in class. I don't remember the 2nd page being the way it is. Did you change it? Regardless, I'm asking because I really like it and like I said in class, leaving it at "let it be." in the end really makes an impact. If you print the whole song for portfolio, I would scale it down because it was pretty long and may take some effort to figure out how to present it to people. Other than that, good work!
ReplyDeleteAmanda - I wonder if there is a happy compromise between the very long original and this 6-page shortened version? I seem to be missing some of the more interesting layouts that happened mid-book in the original... and wonder if you might re-incorporate them? This is such a famous song, as Colleen says, that in my opinion making it too short is just as problematic as leaving it too long. I think you have some freedom here to skip some of the repetitive refrains and go from lyric to lyric as you like. (In other words, this does not have to read exactly as it would be sung).
ReplyDeleteAND - you should definitely build this for the portfolio show to set up on your table - in which case, you would certainly want it to be longer than just this 6 pages. I'm glad you rebalanced the pages without the folios present... they were distracting. BTW - you have a page with almost no type on it in the original, but with lovely muted colors and rounded shapes... showing an evolution of your color palette. I found that very interesting... maybe you could end with that page?
