This week I revised my MBDC brochure and feel like it could still be improved and need some feedback.
MBDC is a company that helps other companies find greener solutions to their business. The target audience of my design is body product companies. I chose this target market because many big body product companies today use chemicals and plastic particles in their products that not only pollute the environment but also affect people's skin. Another reoccurring issue is the one that I talked about in my info graphic on the 2nd spread. More companies, especially body product ones, are using palm oil in their products. The effect this has on the rainforest is devastating and I wanted to continually represent this in my design.
My solution was to use rainforest images in the background throughout my design and to use bright greens and rich browns. In addition to the rainforest images, I frequently used photos of natural alternatives to be used in body products such as Shea Butter and Coconut Oil. These additives are not only natural and safe for the environment but are also especially good for skin. Overall, I wanted to convey that it is easy to leave out the harsh chemicals and create new body product formulas made from healthy, organic substances.

Kayla,
ReplyDeleteI love the way the rain forest element carries throughout the whole brochure, it really gives it a sense of unity. I also noticed you swapped the images on the right side of spread 3, and personally I feel this change give the page a much better balance. I do think you could mess around with the on the first spread some more. It's the only page where there isn't an image spanning the whole page. Other than this one page, the project looks great and I won't do too much to change it.
Mess around with the images on the first spread*
DeleteKayla - this shows improvement... nice job. A few other things to consider:
ReplyDelete1. If I was MBDC, I would want my logo to show just a bit more on the cover. The transparency is great, but a bit more color contrast at the very bottom would help draw the reader's eyes down to find that logo more easily - it's important that it not be missed.
2. I notice that the green Bheads seem to be weaker than the brown Cheads. What can be done about this? Switch? Enlarge the Bheads? Darken the green? Lots of options. This is especially important on page 6, where the heading does not seem to "head up" the sections that sit on page 7. A bolder approach to the heading would help solve this issue.
3. Page 2 green text... since this is an intro paragraph, I wonder if you'd consider enlarging the type to help fill the space and visually emphasize it a bit more? There is a bit of left-over neg space below this text... and it doesn't look intentional (I guess that is why I'm calling it "left over"). How can you work with this area to address both increased contrast, and neg and pos space?
4. I feel the same way about the space below the text on page 6.
5. Page 8 text inside of top image: I wonder if you've considered moving it over to the right side, into the less complicated space (no vertical lines here to run through the text). It might be more readable there.
That's it - this is almost there!
This is a really unique take on this project! I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else use a target audience like body product companies. That’s a great way to think out of the box. The rainforest imagery is really evocative of MBDC’s natural, green business philosophy.
ReplyDeleteI would be careful with the typography, though- you have a LOT of widows and orphans in this project, on almost every page. And remember that colors print darker than they appear on the screen- you might want to consider increasing the opacity on your white text boxes, to prevent the text from being hard to read.
I love the way that you have the different levels of opacity in the white on the last page. You might want to repeat that in the page before, on the last spread, where there is just a plain rectangle of trees at full opacity while the rest has the white overlay. It looks a little bit like a mistake the way it is, but it would look really cool with that layered effect, I think! I might actually try to utilize that throughout the whole brochure, because it’s very pretty.
