Quantum Leap

Hello class,

I am trying to figure out if this piece has portfolio potential.
For Information Design we had to design a page in Time Magazine (right page) for a Quantum Leap smart computer. The information was provided for us and simplified in order for us to create an infographic based off of this big black box (center) which is the actual computer.

Since I am no longer in this class I am actually thinking about redoing the assignment based off of my original sketches before our class found out about the specs.

I will be bringing a copy of this project to class for our circle time.

  1. I was in this class when you made this project, and I still like it! I think it would make a great portfolio piece. My advice would be to work on the arrows/lines that lead to each topic, because they're a little bit disorganized. Some are lightning bolts, one is just a plain line, and one doesn't have anything. Try to find a more unified approach. I would forgo the lightning altogether and try something like a dotted line that you could snake around things, maybe? Then give each blurb a little more space, mostly in the bottom right corner. The top ones are nicely spaced out, but then that one corner gets crowded.

    Good luck!

  2. Lauryn, I find this quite interesting to read because I don't know anything about this subject. Your focal point is clearly the big black computer... but as a focal point, it lacks detail and interest. How can you develop it further to allow it become more interesting? Shadows/highlights/ reflected colors in the black surface of the object? Is there a way to make us believe the computer's name actually sits on the surface of it? Currently, the white type is not transformed to create this illusion... so it seems disconnected in its position. I would encourage you push your Illustrator skill levels here... since this seems like a good opportunity to do so.

Typography - the heading could be more considered in terms of typography. What fonts could you combine? Can you emphasize the word "this"... or another word to add meaning to the line? Show us what you can do in Illustrator here... again, this is an opportunity to show advanced skill level.

Balance - your illustration sits squarely in the middle of the page, with an even distribution of smaller elements floating around it. If symmetry is the page balance you choose... then your heading should sit centered at top. However, I'd encourage you to use asymmetrical balance instead, because it is a more exciting way to design. So - this means you leave the heading FL at top, and then place your computer and other elements in such a way as to visually balance the weight of that heading.

Don't be afraid to introduce overlapping elements here... it will add interest to the design, as well as depth.

  3. Hi Lauryn,

I am not sure where you landed about using this piece in your portfolio, but here is some feedback anyway:
The icons in this piece are done very well, and their placement is great for drawing the viewers eyes around the piece. The typography is the title is working well, giving off a "data" vibe, but I would consider changing the typeface in the subhead. Also, the lines that attach the icons to the center should have consistent spacing, and maybe even be the same design / every other different. The color palette is great though!
