Recipe Project

Hey guys, I was laying out my portfolio and realized I could use an extra piece, so I was wondering what you all thought of this one. Is it worth adding in? Any tips for improvement?

Pretty self explanatory project I think, we had to design a page for a recipe. Mine was beer and cheddar soup. I found a palette of different shades of beer colors and used them along with a cheddar yellow to create the color scheme, and made it look like the page was being filled up by beer by adding the gradient and bubbles in the background. The flowy stripe at the top is supposed to look like foam on top of the beer.

  1. Hi Siobhan!

I really enjoy the design elements used as the background, but I feel like the typeface does is not working that well. I like the title, but the type in the body copy doesn't give off a modern feel that this piece seems to have. I would assume your target is young adults, so I would recommend changing to a sans serif font to help with legibility, as well as add unity to the body copy and the title on the top of the piece. After playing around with that, I think this could become a nice portfolio piece!

  2. S - I do think this has potential and after reading your explanation I want to say... "then do it". Make the bubbles appear to be more in line with bubbles rising from a class of beer. Make the foam in the flowy stripe at the top appear to be foam-shaped, and even spill over into the negative space you have between your columns of text. Your shapes could be more considered and then we'd "see" your design approach come to fruition.

If you do experiment with a type style change, please increase your gutter between the text columns - some space there would help readability.

And... the last item (spice mixture) could use some more directions below the list of ingredients... for the sake of the design (not for the sake of the recipe).
