Here is my personal logo that I am working on refining. I am wondering if the H going off the circle is clear. I wanted it to get the impression of staying within the circle but growing outside of it as well and as needed.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks

Hi Colleen! This is a great start for your logo. It sounds like you have a clear idea of what you want to portray with it, which is often the hardest part. I have a few suggestions:
ReplyDeleteThe plant vine looks great, but the way you have placed the H is a little awkward. It looks like you squished it down to fit in the corner. Try filling more of the space with it, and if you want the impression of it going outside of the circle to be stronger, maybe you could try using a similar gray block shading effect like what you have on the vine. Right now it just looks like the H has been cropped a little to fit in the circle, which from what you said, sounds like it's the opposite of what you intended.
I would also avoid using the green altogether- it doesn't fit in with the rest of the design. If you want your name to stand out more, you could try using the pink for your name and the gray for "graphic & web design", to make that element much more subtle. So far it's looking good!
I mostly agree Siobhan that the H hanging off is odd, maybe you could move it to the right and down until the serif is no seen. other than that The only thing I can think of is to change the typefaces but I don't think you want to do that.
ReplyDeleteColleen, I enjoy the way you are using pos/neg space as it comes in, and leaves, the circle. That is something you should not loose from the design as it evolves.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: which element is most important in this icon... the "H" or the leaves? I suspect, after thinking about it, you'll say the "H"... because it will be echoed down below in your name. So... remove the leaves temporarily, and work with the H and the circle. Then, introduce the leaves in a supportive way... maybe as gray behind the letter, or actually combining with the letter so there are leaves as part of that letter form (I can "see" that being successful).
Once you've created this great circular icon, consider where you can place it in relation to your name? Maybe separating the first and last name? Maybe to the left of your name as it sits on 2 lines? I encourage you to think about its position in relation to the other elements of your name and "graphic design". Centering it is... not possibly as creative as I know you can be.
I think of you as a contemporary designer... so I'm wondering if your serif font, coupled with the script, is an accurate description of who you are? Maybe consider a sans serif for the text... which will help the design become more current?
Colors... I reserve my thoughts about this, until I see what/how you have developed this project. Remember... sometimes Less is More.
