Andy Warhol

Hi guys, here is my third piece. It is a cover and one spread and was from advanced typography. It was a few years ago but I do believe the piece was supposed to be about a famous person and to use them as inspiration for the layout and design itself. My piece is about Andy Warhol and his transition from an average person to the person we all knew as an artist and icon.

During the first round of critique it was suggested that instead of having this be a one spread piece and having to create a back cover, I should maybe turn this piece into a poster. I do like the idea since I think I have other strong pieces in my portfolio that are spreads, but I'm not certain on where to start. I really like the layout and I know I will have to change a lot around. I'm having a hard time seeing this piece from another point of view so any suggestions would help!

  1. Amanda, I really love this! The shapes and colors scream Andy Warhol, and the layout is very interesting. I personally would prefer if you kept it as a spread and just created a simple back cover, maybe with some more of those overlapping triangles. If you do decide to go the poster route, you could try making it a series of posters instead of just one. Something that would be displayed together like this: http://kylegette.com/images/epa_2.jpg where each poster could have a few facts about Andy Warhol, breaking it up into list form instead of the paragraphs in the spread. Either way you do it, I think this will turn out great.

  2. I like siobhan's idea of making a series of posters, i can see those series of poster becoming an advertising campaign maybe for an event that features andy warhol. When i first saw this i had some trouble starting where to read first? so giving a starting point would be good.

  3. Amanda, this is such a strong visual piece that with a few tweaks, and a back cover, it would take a strong position in your portfolio. I would suggest you think about creating a stronger emphasis on page 2 where you want us to start reading... there is so much going on that the reader could easily get confused (as Chris pointed out). And then... there is a need for a back cover. But... because of the large amount of content contained on pages 2 and 3, the back cover could easily be content-light - with large imagery instead. Consider making it a continuation of the cover design... so there would be shared elements and positioning between the 2. Really - that won't be much work for you, so I encourage you to continue with this format rather than taking a huge step backwards to think about these 3 pages as separate posters. Make sure to get someone else to read the text... it's difficult for me to do this on screen. Nice project!!

  4. Hi Amanda I absolutely love this piece this definitely reads Andy Warhol. Since the front cover and spread are equally interesting I think you can go both ways. I think you can just use the spread or create a simple back cover and include the front cover, it's totally up to you. This project looks close to being complete no matter which way you go! Great project!
